I’m working with very unusual plants and what information I found recently. The Atlantic Pistachio (Pistacia Atlantica), named by the oldest tree of Cyprus, grows in mountain small village Apessia to the north from Limassol for already one and a half thousand years. And though inhabitants of the island affirm, that some local olive trees have found Jesus Christ, the representative of Department of the forestry Takis Papachristoforu has confirmed, that pistachio tree of Apessia is not the greatest and strong, but still is officially recognized being the oldest tree of the country. As has told Takis Papachristoforu, the thickest trunk have the olive tree at the place Xiliatos in area of Nicosia –it possesses the perimeter of 13 meters. Hollow trunk, therefore through it is possible even to pass. In small village Lania near Limassol is considered the Cyprian oak as being the biggest tree of the island. Old or rare trees are declared on Cyprus as national monuments and are under protection of Department of forestry. «A tree can be 80 or 120 years old but if it rare it gets the status of a protected monument », – speaks Takis Papachristoforu. Almost all such trees are supplied by the special wooden tablets containing all necessary information. Annually the government of republic allocates for their maintenance of 18.000 Cyprian pounds. Now on Cyprus there are 47 separately standing trees and eight groves, which are recognized as national monuments. In the beginning of this year the government of Cyprus has officially declared the Gold oak a national tree of Republic, and the Cyprian cyclamen - a national plant. The biggest problem on Cyprus is caused with rough construction of new cyprus villas which are for rent. Of course builders do not touch trees, but such mass construction of villas leads to infringements in water exchange. |
